Just Who Is Elmo?

There are very little chances that you do not know anything about Elmo by now! Elmo is a little red puppet starring in the famous Sesame Street children’s program. He describes himself as 3 and a half years old, talks only in third person singular and he never uses pronouns. This gives him of type of speech resembling very much a toddlers way of talking. His high-pitch voice as well as his cute jokes and his affectionate behavior make Elmo one of the most beloved characters from Sesame Street. The first puppeteer to give life to the little red monster was Caroll Spinney (during the ‘70s), then Brian Muehl (1979 – 1981) and Richard Hunt (1981 – 1984) took on Elmo’s role.

But it was Kevin Clash who made Elmo as popular as he is. Unlike other Sesame Street characters, who are mainly portrayed as adults (ie Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch), Kevin thought to make Elmo more child-like and innocent. Elmo became an instant hit among preschoolers.

Apart from being the host of the last 15 minutes from Sesame Street, Elmo also has had a very active “social life” ever since. Invited to Martha Stewart Living, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, The Tony Danza Show, The View, Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me and Oprah, Elmo managed to improve his success and gather more and more fans each time he appeared.

Nowadays, it seems like everything related to Elmo will be an instant success just because it bears the signature of the red, furry puppet. Toys, movies and his own television show have had a tremendous success. With such a huge popularity, it is no wonder that there are many people thinking to dress up like Elmo for Halloween.
