There’s a good chance that you’re baby’s first word will be “Aaaa-Mo.” It took me a while to figure out what the appeal was with Elmo – sure, he’s a puppet on Sesame Street, he’s cute and fuzzy, and he’s a bright, primary red.
I still don’t have any scientific answers, but I think his appeal lies in the fact that he acts just like a kid, while most of the other characters act closer to adults (can you imagine your 3 year old with the mentality of Big Bird? Heck, no!) Combine Elmo’s authentic child-like innocence with his bright, primary colors, his big eyes and his high-pitch voice, and you can see why infants take an immediate liking to him!
Elmo is a perfect choice for kids, because most costumes are warm, fuzzy bodysuits, making them excellent for more northerly climates on Halloween night. The bright red color also makes them highly visible to drivers, making them one of the safest of outfits to wear.
If you are going to be putting together your own toddler Halloween costume, you can find some good ideas if you look online. You can simply find a red plush bodysuit and stick on two googly eyes and an orange nose. If you think they are going to be in a stroller while wearing the costume, you don’t have to worry about boots or even having the costume look quite exact.
If your child has friends, think about having them all dress as Sesame Street characters. If you wish to dress up, and you don’t feel like wearing an Elmo costume, you can dress as Mr. Noodle! All you need are pants, a long-sleeved white shirt, a plaid vest, bowtie and a mustache. Make sure to mess your hair up, too! Of course, you’ll have to act goofy around your child!
